Mrs. Dorothy McClung Lewis, (The Mississippi Songbird), is the eighth of nine children born on July 26, 1950,to the late John Franklin and Emily Magnolia McClung, in Pickensville, Alabama. After the death of her father, the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama.

In 1961, the family moved once more, from Birmingham, Alabama to Columbus, Mississippi. While living in Columbus, in 1967, Dorothy completed her formal education at Robert E. Hunt High School. In 1972, she completed a B.S. Degree from Rust College in Holly Springs, MS. She has completed many hours towards a Maters Degree in Counseling. After 34 years of teaching, the Holy Spirit has directed her to go full time into the music ministry. This has been her long life’s dream.

Recordings and Awards: Dorothy has received many trophies, recognitions and awards for her singing ministry. Her TV appearances include The Bobby Jones Gospel show, Lue Rawls Telethon, and many Black History Celebrations shows.

Her solo recording credits include: Lord I Finally See the Light-1992; Merry Christmas from Dorothy McClung Lewis- 1994; Songs from the Heart-1996; After the Storm, first CD, released in 1998, The Cycle of Life CD, released in 2006, and a collection of Old Acappella Hymns, released in 2007.

In July of 1994, Dorothy received the album of the Year for "Lord, I finally see the Light" at the Mississippi Annual Gospel Musical Awards; the 1999 Luther Barnes Fall Gospel Classic Performance Award; the 2001 WJXN-WJNS Mississippi Music Award for female vocalist of the year; the 2002 Mississippi Gospel Music “Diva Award,” at the 24th Annual Cingular Wireless Mississippi Gospel Music Awards. In 2006 she received the Religion Music Achievement Certificate from the Salt/Pepper Club and the Craig D. Bluntson & WOAD-WKXI Senior Citizen Service Award.  

Performance highlight: Dorothy has been a member of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks of the World since 1977. She was appointed and given the title of “The Mississippi Songbird” by Donald P. Wilson, Grand Exalted Ruler of the Grand Lodge of the I.B.P.O. of Elks of the World during the 1985 convention in St. Louis, Missouri. Other performances include 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans, Louisiana; the 1993 Inaugural festivities for President William Jefferson Clinton; the 1992 Bobby Jones Gospel Show; the Shirley Caesar Crusade, National Black Caucus Convention honoring Congressional Representative Bennie Thompson; the Daughters of Margaret, Dramatic poetry group; the National Baptist Convention in New York, New York, New Orleans, LA, Birmingham, AL, and Jackson, MS. In 2005, Dorothy was the opening performer on the Mary Mary Concert in Jackson, MS.


Church/Employment/Family:  Dorothy was an active member of Cade Chapel M. B. Church of Jackson, Mississippi. She was also actively involved in the choirs and the theatrical departments. She recently became a member of Word of Faith in Marietta, Georgia. 

After completing a career as a teacher, administrator, and a Literacy Coach in the Jackson Public School District, Dorothy moved to Marietta, Georgia, where she could be close to her children and her first born grand child. She is presently an eighth grade reading teacher in the Cobb County School District.

Dorothy has made many accomplishments in her teaching career during the past 34 years, and has left a positive impression on many children lives that are probablely living all over this world.

Personal Notes: Dorothy is divorced, but prayerfully, continues to thank and praise God for helping her become the proud mother of two Godly children, one son and one daughter. She thanks God for empowering her with a gifted voice to sing his praises. She fills blessed to be used as one of His instruments, spreading the gospel through her melodious vocals where ever she goes. Her faith in God and love for her family and her fellowman is strongly expressed in each song.

Dorothy ‘s greatest joy comes from singing about Gods healing power, and how His power is  revealed through  comforting words song by the artist, to those needing to hear and fill the presents of the Holy Spirit.
